Frequently asked questions?

Why visit the dental hygienist in addition to the dentist?

A visit to the dental hygienist is a valuable addition to the check-up at the dentist. While the dentist mainly looks at general health and any damage to teeth, the dental hygienist focuses on preventing problems such as gum inflammation, caries (cavities) and the removal of plaque and tartar.

By visiting the dental hygienist regularly:

  • You (or your child) receive professional cleaning that reaches difficult-to-access areas at home.
  • Early gum problems are detected and treated promptly.
  • You learn better brushing and care techniques tailored to your situation.
  • You reduce the chance of larger, more expensive treatments in the future.

In short: the dental hygienist actively helps you keep your mouth healthy - especially between dental check-ups.

Does my health insurance cover the treatment?

Yes, in most cases, dental care treatments for children up to 18 years are fully covered by the basic health insurance. This includes periodic check-ups, fluoride treatments, fillings and tartar removal. You pay no deductible or co-payment for this.

Please note: orthodontics (such as braces) is not covered by the basic health insurance. This usually requires supplementary dental insurance. Therefore always check the policy conditions of your health insurer or contact your insurer to know exactly what is covered for your child.

Do I need a referral from my dentist to make an appointment?

No, you do not need a referral from your dentist to make an appointment with the dental hygienist. You can contact us directly and schedule an appointment, even if you have never visited before. This makes it easy to get help quickly for issues such as plaque, sensitive gums or dental care for children. A quick approach often prevents larger problems in the future. Would you like to make an appointment or learn more about our treatments? Please feel free to contact us.

What does a dental hygienist actually do?

A dental hygienist focuses on preventing and treating tooth and gum problems. You can visit the dental hygienist for tartar and plaque removal, brushing instructions, fluoride application, treating early gum inflammation (gingivitis) and advice on oral care and nutrition. A dental hygienist also regularly checks for risk factors for cavities or gum problems. This helps you - or your child - maintain a permanently healthy mouth.

What happens at a first appointment?

At a first appointment with the dental hygienist, an extensive intake is usually conducted. This means the hygienist first has a conversation with you to learn more about your oral health, any complaints, medical history and habits, such as your eating and brushing habits.

Then an oral examination is performed, in which the dental hygienist examines your teeth and gums. This may also include checking for tartar, gum inflammation (gingivitis) or periodontitis (inflammation of the supporting tissue of the teeth). Depending on the findings, the dental hygienist may suggest various treatments, such as removing tartar, polishing the teeth or giving advice on how to better care for your mouth.

You also often receive personal oral care advice, such as tips on brushing, the use of dental floss or interdental brushes, and the prevention of tooth decay or gum problems.

The goal of the first appointment is to promote good oral hygiene and to recognize and address any problems early.

My children often get cavities, why is that?

Children often get cavities due to a combination of poor brushing, too much sugar, and eating or drinking too frequently. Sweet drinks and snacks in particular cause acid formation that damages the enamel. Nocturnal feeding and a lack of fluoride can also contribute. Even genetic predisposition sometimes plays a role.

By brushing twice a day with fluoride, limiting sugar intake and scheduling regular check-ups with the dentist, you can help prevent cavities.
